World War II Era Combat Insignia Series Stamp Albums Vol: 1, 2 and 3

Lot Number: 19

The 1942 “War Insignia Stamp Albums” feature 150 stamps across three volumes of the original “Postamp” Series. These albums chronicle the formation of an aero squadron in the spring of 1917, following America’s entry into WWI, composed entirely of American pilots from the Lafayette Escadrille. The booklets showcase the first combat insignia used by the unit, an Indian head profile symbolizing the cunning and fortitude of Native Americans. The 103rd Aero Squadron adorned this insignia until Ace Captain Eddie Rickenbacker took command of the 94th Squadron, which bore the iconic “Hat in the Ring” insignia, marking America’s frontline air combat presence in WWI alongside France, Britain, and their allies against Germany. The albums, with stamps placed adjacent to their descriptions, are in good condition and were copyrighted in 1942 by Hearst Publications, Inc., and Robert Lash Robbins.
